CHELMSFORD City Council's bid to tackle overgrown hedges and verges has received a £50,000 boost.

Essex County Council has pledged to double the money the City Council plans spend £53,000 to spend on the problem.

Earlier this year, Essex County Council offered each local authority in Essex £50,000 to encourage collaborative working with city, district and borough councils.

These monies are to be used for dealing with local priorities such as flooding and verge maintenance. The offer was made on the basis that these funds are matched by the authority up to a total of £50,000.

County Councillor Rodney Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "I want to repeat our initiative for Chelmsford City Council and contribute £50,000.

"This will give Chelmsford's Local Highways Panel greater spending power to significantly enhance Chelmsford's neighbourhoods.

"We have already undertaken a similar successful partnership with Rochford District Council and I want to encourage any District or Borough Council who has not taken up the offer to do so."
