A DOCTOR who groped a young mum he was supposed to be examining has been convicted of sexual assault.

Olakunle Arowojolu, 54, of Tollgate Drive, Stanway, had denied touching the 23-yearold’s private parts during an impromptu examination.

However, he was convicted by the jury of four women and eight men. Sentencing was adjourned until next month.

The jury was told Arowojolu, who had worked as a GP in Essex, was working a shift at Kelvedon and Feering Health Centre when the offence took place.

Chelmsford Crown Court was told he had seen the woman in the reception area at North Chelmsford NHS Health Centre as he finished his eight-hour shift for Primecare on 22 July, 2013, at 12.40am.

The court heard she had said she was concerned how her stomach looked after two children and he told her to follow him.

Carolyn Gardiner, prosecuting, said: “Arowojolu used his powerful position to effectively intimidate the complainant into going along with what he wanted, before she was able to get away.”

In the consultation room he put one hand vertically on her stomach and put his other arm around her as she did sit-ups.

The woman told the court he had helped her do sit-ups while his hand was inside her knickers and his fingertips touching her inappropriately.

Arowojolu denied he touched the woman’s private parts at all, but said he might have inadvertently touched the side of her left breast during the sit-up movement.

He said he had helped her to do six or seven sit-ups, which she couldn’t do on her own, and added he could not say explain why the woman would have made the allegation.

Arowojolu qualified in Nigeria and worked as a hospital registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology, a speciality he also pursued in the UK.

He moved to Britain in 1995 and later re-trained as a GP.

In 2005, he started at Kelvedon and Feering practice as a locum and was made a partner in July 2012. He retired in August.
