The Care Quality Commission has rated Broomfield Hospital as requiring improvement following an inspection.

The inspection report, released on Thursday, relayed findings found during an announced inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at the hospital between November 26 and 28, which was followed by an unannounced inspection on December 6.

A further unannounced inspection of the hospital's emergency and assessment unit on February 5 resulted in enforcement action being put in place, which was followed by a further inspection on March 26 to ensure that systems were in place to protect people from avoidable harm.

The inspections found that Broomfield Hospital's emergency department (ED) and emergency assessment unit (EAU) was inadequate while the maternity and gynaecology services, end of life care, outpatients and diagnostic imaging, medical care, specialist burns and plastic surgery services and surgery all required improvement.

Only the hospital's services for children and young people and critical care unit were rated good.

However, several areas were highlighted as outstanding practice, including the caring approach shown by the chaplaincy and services provided for bereaved families, pathways for breast reconstruction and hand therapy and local leadership and innovation in the intensive care unit.
