STEEL boxes created for knife carriers to anonymously hand in their weapons as part of a knife amnesty have yet to be installed.

The city’s knife amnesty was launched by Only Cowards Carry and Essex Police on June 16, but the original location, outside Chelmsford police station, was deemed unsuitable.

The delays have upset the family and friends of Ashley Woolley, who died, aged 18, after being stabbed, but Essex Police have now confirmed locations have been decided.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “Evidence suggests we may see more success from the bins if they are placed in positions away from a police station or an area with CCTV coverage.

“It is important for the bins to be placed in locations which are most likely to be successful.

“The locations have now been identified following extensive analytical work on knife crime in the Chelmsford area. “Structural efforts to ensure the bins are secure will soon take place.

“In the meantime, anyone who wishes to hand over a knife can do so at the front desk of Chelmsford police station.”

Trevor Woolley, Ashley’s father, said: “It’s great news.

“I’m delighted that a place has been found and hopefully they will be put in in use in the very near future.”
