Birkett's biggest fundraiser, the Race4Business, has been cancelled today (Thursday June 23).

The event, which expected 1,000 runners to race through Chelmsford in aid of the J's Hospice, was called off after the river broke its banks in various places.

A spokesman said: "Since 1.00pm the water level on the River Chelmer has risen considerably, has broken its banks in places, and continues to rise.

"Further rain is forecast imminently. Parts of the course are now under several feet of water.

"We have endeavoured to change the route of the course but sadly this has not been possible due to the extent of the flooding.

"It is therefore with great regret that we have been advised to cancel the 2016 Race4Business this evening."
