CHELMSFORD Chieftains had a mixed weekend as they lost 5-1 against the Flames of Guildford on Saturday before recording a 4-0 home victory on Sunday to Bracknell Hornets.

Saturday’s loss was against higher league opposition in the English Challenge Cup, a competition set up to test the best of the National League teams against higher league opposition.

Danny Hammond scored Chieftains’ solitary goal, but it was definitely not a walk over for the Premier League outfit who were made to work for the entire 60 minutes for the points.

Chieftains had a short bench on Sunday due to injury and the youngsters not available due to Under-18 commitments.

Chieftains took the lead on 29:12 as Matt Turner scored from Bailey Chittock’s assist.

Another strike from Turner, a brace from Ross Brears and a shut-out from netminder Euan King completed the job giving their team maximum points to keep the pressure on Streatham Redskins who are now top of NIHL Division 1 South table, but only on goal difference.

The Chieftains have two games in hand on the south London team.

This weekend sees the Chieftains head to Milton Keynes to face the Lightning in the English Challenge Cup.

And on Sunday it is the eagerly awaited derby clash at the Riverside with the London Raiders, who were the Romford Raiders prior to their rebranding following their move to Lee Valley.

The two sides have been going head-to-head since the Riverside opened 27 years ago and the Chelmsford venue will again play host to the derby clash which faces-off at 6.30pm.
