CHELMSFORD Ladies’ first team were unable to convert possession and initiative into a win as they lost 1-0 to Wimbledon in Investec EHL Conference East.

Holding a well-structured midfield, Chelmsford where clearly the stronger side for much of the opening 15 minutes of the game.

Outstanding contributions from Sarah Bolton and Jess Bryan in the centre of the pitch ensured Chelmsford’s front runners had much to work with. Two efforts on goal from Kate Maxey and another from Tori Clark rattled the Wimbledon defence.

As the end of the first half came near, short corners were won by both sides but without a goal and the break saw the sides go in with honours even.

As would be expected from the home side, Chelmsford came out for the second half motivated and with great self-belief. Within minutes a short corner was won and further efforts from Maxey went wide.

Chelmsford pressed forward but after 15 minutes a rare sortie by Wimbledon resulted in a goal, and against the run of play Chelmsford were behind.

Undeterred, Chelmsford regained domination of the game and excellent performances from Collette Ager and Kate Taylor in attack gave hope to the large home crowd. Frustratingly, efforts on goal went the wrong side of the post or were pushed away by a packed defence. Wimbledon hung on to the final whistle and Chelmsford were left to reflect how a good all round performance was not enough to secure the points.

Chelmsford travel to Horsham on Saturday in the league.
