CHELMSFORD Cricket Club’s first XI suffered a disappointing weekend with league defeat on Saturday being followed by a cup reverse on Sunday.

The Premier Division leaders went down by six wickets at Chingford on Saturday to slip to third in the table.

Dan Hagan (74) and Jack Sterland (63) anchored the visitors’ innings of 288-9 in the 50-over match.

But Chelmsford failed to make an impact with the ball as Chingford replied with 290-4.

Sunday saw Chelmsford travel to Upminster in the Dukes League Cup third round and lose by four wickets.

Hagan top-scored again with 34 runs but Chelmsford were bowled out for 136 and then saw Hornchurch reply with 140-6 despite Anthony Hill taking 3-33.

Chelmsford’s second XI also suffered defeat, losing by a wicket to visitors Brentwood II in the Premier Division.

Wicketkeeper Bradley Green (32) and Rob Catchpole (28) anchored Chelmsford’s 153 all out total before Brentwood posted 157-9 in reply, with three home bowlers taking a brace each.

The third XI enjoyed a 15-run Premier Division win at Buckhurst Hill after wicketkeeper Chris Drain (45) and David Thrift (33) helped the visitors to 156 all out.

James Arnold (5-39), Harry Green (2-28) and Craig Thompson (2-33) did the damage with the ball to bowl Buckhurst out for 141.

Chelmsford’s fourth XI were held to a home draw in Third XI Division One by visitors Colchester & East Essex.

An unbeaten 100 by Tom Iliffe, 73 from Andrew Rycroft and an undefeated 46 from Micky Burns were the highlights of Chelmsford’s 254-5 declared. Keith Goodman then took 4-35 to help restrict Colchester to 209-7 in reply.

Chelmsford’s fifth XI lost by three wickets at home to Horndon on the Hill III in the Fourth XI Premier Division.

Zishan Panjwani led the way with 73 runs as the hosts posted 228-9, before Jack Campion took 4-53 during Horndon’s 229-7 reply.
