NIHL Division 1 South leaders Chelmsford Chieftains defeated Oxford City Stars 4-3 on the road on Sunday.

The Stars have been a thorn in their side this season, the Chieftains dropping three points in the last two meets. But a narrow 4-3 victory secured two much-needed points to keep them on course to retain their league championship.

Danny Hammond opened the scoring for the Chieftains but Oxford levelled early in the second period.

Hammond and Matt Turner scored in quick succession to make it 3-1 but Stars scored again.

Oxford equalised in the final period but Turner scored again and the visitors held out for the win.

To complete what was a great weekend for Chelmsford ice hockey, the young Warriors came from behind to defeat rivals London Haringey Racers 5-4 at Riverside in front of more than 700, a record crowd for the NIHL Division 2 East leaders.

Chieftains host Milton Keynes Thunder on Sunday at 6.30pm and have a South East Cup encounter with Invicta Dynamos on Thursday, January 28 at 8pm.
