CHELMSFORD CITY’s never-say-die spirit swept them to a Ridley League double with a last-gasp Dominoes Cup triumph over Felsted Chequers A.
The absence of Jon English brought the best out of City, not least dartsman Martin Compton, who played a key role, chalking up three wins out of three as Les Parker's stand-in partner.
Chequers, holders five times in ten years, edged the first round of matches, but City – who had carried off the Darts Cup a week earlier – were level after the second.
It was nip and tuck to the end, but Parker and Compton completed their hat-trick, and Barry Devenish and Simon Whalley won again to put CCFC”s name on the trophy for the first time.
Dominoes Cup final: CCFC A 5, Chequers A 4. Scores (City A first): D Hill & R Mallord lost to N Linin & D Wilks, lost to D Laudrum & K Sweeting, lost to B Allington & S Laudrum; M Compton & L Parker bt Allington & S Laudrum, bt Linin & Wilks, bt D Laudrum & Sweeting; B Devenish & S Whalley lost to D Laudrum & Sweeting, bt Allington & S Laudrum, bt Linin & Wilks.
The committee and clubs extend sincere condolences to the family of league chairman Vernon Trim, who died last week. Vernon will be missed by all.
